Pic of the month - November

The Great Wall of China

The pic of the month for November is a shot I took of the Great Wall of China, when I was there around this time last year.

This particular section of the wall is known as the Mutianyu Great Wall and is probably the closest section to the city of Beijing (about 80kms).

Once you arrive at the base of the mountain, you can hike up to the wall, or take the chairlift. Unfortunately I was on a tight schedule, so I took the chairlift, which was pretty scary since it was quite old and in need of a good spit and polish (plus a grease and oil-change, paint job etc etc)!!

Admission costs 40 yuan (about AUD 6.00) and the chair-lift costs 80 yuan (about AUD 12.00) for a round-trip, but if you are up for it, and have the time, I would hike up.

The great thing for me was that I was there right when the ticket office opened at 8am, so there was no-one around and when I got to the wall, I had it all to myself - well, for about an hour at least! If you don't get there until 10am, expect to battle the crowds!

And I even had mobile phone coverage on the wall, so I could call friends and family!! All in all, an amazing experience and highly recommended!
